FamilySearch

www.familysearch.org

This extensive free genealogy service is provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You will need to sign up for a free account if you want to view records or save them in a tree. This site one of the best free online resources available, and it has billions of names in searchable collections, with millions more added every month.

Under the Family Tree section you can search trees that others have constructed. This is a great starting point. Remember though, that with trees in FamilySearch, you can make changes to someone else’s tree and they can make changes to yours.

The Search section is where you access the digitised records. You can choose Search Historical Records on the left, or search by Location using the map, or narrow your search to a specific collection in the Find a Collection search box.

When searching records, take note of the Restrict Records By options in the left side bar.

This is a handy filtering mechanism to narrow down your search. For example, if I find a Baptism record for my ancestor James Barak Ellis, and click on View (on the right) and then on the down arrow next to Document Information, I can note the Batch number and the Film number. I can use these numbers to look for other Ellis family members who may have been baptised at the same church, and therefore might have a record in the same batch.

The Memories section is where all photos, stories, documents, and audio recordings added to FamilySearch are collected.

The Indexing section is where volunteers can sign up to assist in the indexing of records for Family Search.
